Deborah Bright's work is so different than anything I have seen. In every photo, you assume it is a photo like any other from back in the day...and then you look closer. In the classic photos we can all recognize, there is always a subject composited into it. This series of work was all about immersing a modern day butch lesbian into spaces in which she "didn't fit". In places where the cis-gendered, white male would appear, we instead see this very out of place lesbian. The whole concept it genius and really sparks a lot of feelings and thoughts on the topic of gender and gender roles. Aside from this work, her portraiture and double exposures have an effortless elegance to them that I could only hope to achieve one day. I will be looking at her work a lot more often after discovering her while creating this list.
